Good news, good news, and more good news

I was halfway through a heavy-hearted blog post when everything in my day started going right, and I just couldn’t even finish.

Good news:
As a university employee, I get money every term for professional development. I just heard back from Human Resources this morning that they’ve accepted my request to put the money this term towards a circuit training course. I’ll be taking the class with a co-worker two evenings each week until the end of January! I’m super excited that I get to put the money towards a fitness class. As a recent student (but life-long learner), I wasn’t ready to jump back into formal academic classes, but I’m glad I’ll still be able to put it to use!

Good news:
I carefully made the decision not to wade into the #ecca (Edmonton City Centre Airport) debate on my blog – but I’m too riled up about today’s decisions not to write a little something. My thoughts are this:

  • I’m disappointed with the rhetoric from both sides. Yes, the big story was that Envision Edmonton came across as a bunch of sore losers. And they were. Attacks on Mayor Mandel, claims that he bullied the City Clerks office, were unfounded. Some publicly decried democracy in Edmonton. On the other hand, though, those of us who were pro-closure were also sore winners. Tweeters called for the airport to be shut down within the year, and I read a few quips along the lines of, “Na-na-na-na-boo-boo.” Here are three tweets from today that I think were positive examples of reactions to the result.
  • I do have a lengthier essay saved up on the airport, but I’m not sure if this post is the best place to put it. I’ll have to think about it.

More good news:
Another topic I’ve steered relatively clear of on the blog until now is Michael’s campaign. For new or casual readers, my fiance, Michael Janz, is running for Public School Trustee in Ward F in the upcoming municipal election. I’ve barely touched on it here because I wasn’t sure if a readership who is interested in my crazy cat hood purchases would also be interested in the municipal election. But, the Edmonton municipal election is important, and the campaign is also a huge part of my life right now (and this, after all, a blog about my life in Edmonton).
So, the good news is that everything is coming together for our fundraiser brunch this coming Sunday, September 19! I’ve been running around mental for the last couple weeks trying to plan it, and it looks like we are going to pull it off in the most fantastic fashion! I was thrilled to receive two silent auction items this afternoon! One is a limited edition DVD set (~$280), and the other is two tickets to a Citadel show! I wasn’t expecting either of those, so they were wonderful surprises to cap off my afternoon.
In case you are interested, you can purchase a ticket by contacting me at brittanykustra@gmail.com. I’d be happy to share more details with you over e-mail!

I have a fourth piece of good news that I’ll save for tomorrow’s post – and I’ll leave it at that! ~Teaser, ooh, what could it be?~ Hint: It is adorable.
